Aloha. I love Hawaii, it’s one of my favorite places to visit! If you’ve been there then there’a a pretty good chance you love it too. And you may already know which island is your favorite (I’ll share mine at the end of this post!). If you haven’t been to Hawaii yet it can be hard to choose which island to go to. Here is an overview of the Hawaiian Islands. I hope it helps you decide which is the best island to visit in Hawaii.

Hawaii has 4 main islands that you can visit: Hawaii (often called the Big Island), Maui, Oahu, and Kauai. There are the lesser known islands of Molokai and Lanai that you can visit too. All of the Hawaiian Islands are incredible places to vacation. But each has it’s own unique appeal. So let’s talk about each of these 5 islands and why you might choose them for your Hawaiian vacation.

The Big Island

The Big Island is the largest Hawaiian island and has a real laid back vibe. The island itself has a little bit of everything. The west shore is the dry side of the island and is known for its plethora of coffee farms. Kona coffee boasts some of the finest coffee beans in the world. Coffee lovers will want to come here! You can also find several macadamia nut and Hawaiian beach with palm trees and lava rock on the Big Islandchocolate farms on this side of the island.

Geology lovers may think that the Big Island is the best island to visit in Hawaii because of its volcanoes. The Big Island is home to Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park where you can see actual lava! There are many other cool things to see besides lava. There are tons of hiking trails, craters, and viewpoints to see. Plus there are petroglyph sites and sea arches created by lava tubes! It really is a unique place to see!

The east side of the island is the wet side, meaning beautiful lush jungles, farms, botanical gardens. Everything wants to grow over here! The Hilo farmers market is a real treat if you are a foodie like me.

Rugged ocean cliffs of the south shore on the Big IslandThe southern part of the island is much more rugged. This is where you will find breathtaking views of ocean cliffs, and black sand beaches. And more dense rainforests full of exotic plants.

The majority of the beaches on the big island were formed by lava so can be really rocky. You’ll find a few white sand beaches, but there aren’t many here. If white sandy beaches are important to you, then this may not be the best island for you to visit in Hawaii.
